12 Hour Climb UPDATE!

12 Hour Climb

The Climbers: Logan Brookins, Eric Lisikowski
The Mission: Climb a 15 foot rope for 12 hours to raise funds for children & adults with disabilities!

ConnectAbility is an organization for children and adults with disabilities, and on April 29, 2017 we will climb a 15ft rope for 12 hours to raise money in an effort to help with their mission.  ConnectAbility’s mission is Creating Communities where people of all abilities are valued, included and empowered, this mission statement speaks directly to my heart and has moved me to use my abilities to support this community in any way possible.

My involvement with the special needs community began 6 years ago when I partnered with the Kay Center for the Special Olympics.  Each year I get to participate in volleyball and flag football and each year I am blessed beyond words to have such humble hardworking people in my life.  The majority of our culture feels uncomfortable being a friend to someone who is perceived differently.  No person should be ostracized for something they have no control over.  I was one of these people, unsure how to speak to a person with disabilities and unsure how to interact, but I am here to say when I let those walls down I saw the beauty of Gods creation.  I saw people who have so much to offer to the world, I saw humble and passionate souls that want a voice, and I saw the indescribable love they have for life.

I was recently told a story about a child with special needs who went through elementary and middle school and he had only been invited to one birthday party.  I am not sure what most kids or parents were thinking but I could imagine it was something along the lines of “they are special I don’t think they can participate with the other kids” or “I am not sure how to handle this”.  I am a member of the club SEEK (students encouraging exceptional kids) here at UNG and I have had the privilege of working with this child and I can assure you he has given more to me than I could ever imagine giving to him.  ConnectAbility provides an environment where adults and children with disabilities get to experience a world they would normally not experience.  ConnectAbility provides family support services, community connections, and individualized support to families and individuals with disabilities.  It is my heart’s cry to see a community that is unashamed or unafraid to treat disabled individuals with respect and dignity because a disability does not define a person’s identity.

For these reasons Eric and I have decided to partner with ConnectAbility to try and raise money to support the organizations’ efforts to bridge this gap.
