Thousand Words Gala

The Thousand Words Photography Project captures the heart of ConnectAbility’s mission: creating communities where people of all abilities are valued, included, and empowered.

Too often, people with disabilities are overlooked in the world of art – both as creators and as consumers. Yet they bring unique perspectives and powerful stories that deserve to be seen and celebrated. The Thousand Words Photography Project exists to amplify those perspectives by giving artists a visual voice through photography.

Participants of all abilities – from professionals to amateurs to those picking up a camera for the very first time – come together to explore and share their creativity. With encouragement and mentorship, their skills grow, and many photographers return year after year, building on their talents while continuing to reveal new ways of seeing the world.

What began as an opportunity to give voice through pictures has grown into a powerful reminder that art belongs to everyone. Each image invites us to pause, to listen, and to recognize the dignity, creativity, and beauty within every individual.

The Thousand Words Photography Project is more than an art exhibit – it is a celebration of perspective, belonging, and the transformative power of inclusion.

Each March, the Thousand Words Gala showcases the work of our photographers and celebrates their accomplishments. Guests experience the stories behind the images, and during the evening’s auction, these powerful photographs find new homes in the community – continuing the story of inclusion and connection.
