Stories That Connect Us

Tom Shandy, Board Chair, ConnectAbility
Communities are built through relationships. They are strengthened when people feel seen, valued, and connected. At ConnectAbility, we believe that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves to experience belonging and purpose. Over the years, our organization has grown into something truly special; a community where families find support, friendships grow, and people discover that they are not alone.
What began as a local effort has grown into a regional network of connection and encouragement. Today, ConnectAbility serves families not only in Lumpkin County, but also in Hall County, Dawson County, and surrounding communities across Northeast Georgia. Parents, siblings, volunteers, and individuals of all abilities gather through our programs and events to build relationships that extend far beyond a single evening or activity. What we are building together is a community.
One of the clearest examples of this spirit can be seen at our annual Talent Show (my personal favorite event of the year). The Talent Show is more than just a stage and a spotlight. It is a moment where individuals share their gifts with confidence and pride. We see singers, dancers, and performers of all kinds take the stage. But what makes the evening truly special is the courage, joy, and encouragement that fills the room.
At the Talent Show, the audience cheers not only for the performance but for the person. Families celebrate milestones. Friends encourage one another. Volunteers witness the incredible abilities of participants who may not have a stage elsewhere. It is one of those nights that reminds us exactly why ConnectAbility exists.
And while the Talent Show is a highlight, it is only one part of the impact happening throughout the year. Through inclusive social events, family support programs, and community gatherings, ConnectAbility continues to create spaces where people feel connected and supported. We regularly hear stories from families who found friendships here, from parents who discovered encouragement during difficult seasons, and from individuals who gained the confidence to share their voice.
Another special event coming soon is the Thousand Words Gala and Photography Gala, which will be held on March 27 at R-Ranch. This event is always a fun and meaningful evening for our community. Through photography and storytelling, participants share powerful images that capture moments of joy, connection, and life experiences. (The printed images are available in a silent auction online that’s open for everyone from March 20-27!) The gala brings everyone together to celebrate those stories while raising awareness and support for the mission of ConnectAbility.
Those stories matter. In fact, they are the heart of our mission. Behind every event and every program is a real person whose life has been touched by this community. That is why we are beginning a new initiative to collect and share the stories of our ConnectAbility families and participants.
Starting this year, we will feature a new story of impact each month, stories that highlight how connection, support, and inclusion have changed lives. These stories will be shared with our broader community so that more people can understand the difference this organization is making across our region.
If ConnectAbility has made a difference in your life or in the life of someone you love, we invite you to share your story. Your experience could encourage another family, inspire a volunteer, or help someone discover a community they didn’t know existed.
Stories also help others see the value of this work. When people understand the impact of ConnectAbility, they are more likely to get involved whether by volunteering, attending an event, or supporting the organization through monthly giving. Every contribution helps us continue creating opportunities for connection and belonging.
Most importantly, your story reminds us why we do this work.
Because at ConnectAbility, the greatest impact is not just in the events we host, it is in the lives we touch and the community we build together.
And those stories are just beginning.
